When your furnace won’t kick on in the winter, it can be alarming as well as uncomfortable. It will get very cold indoors very quickly without a fully functioning furnace. You’ll want to be proactive and troubleshoot the problem or call us for a service visit so you are not left out in the cold.
Many times the problem is not with the furnace unit itself, but with your thermostat. Check to make sure that the thermostat is set to “heat”. The thermostat must be set at a temperature above the temperature inside for the furnace to turn on. For example, if your indoor temperature is currently 68 degrees, and your thermostat is set to 67, the furnace will not kick on.
You might also want to check to make sure your thermostat is clean (remove the cover to make sure that there is no dust buildup inside). If you have done any remodeling or drywall sanding recently you’d be surprised at how much dust gets inside of your thermostat which interferes with its sensors.
The problem with your furnace might be a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse. You can check your electrical panel to make sure that the circuit switch is toggled to “on”. If it has tripped, you’ll want to reset the switch and wait for the furnace to cycle on.
Dirty air filters are another reason why furnaces won’t turn on. A severely blocked air filter will cause your furnace to shut down and not turn on again for safety reasons. Make sure to change your air filter frequently and at least once before every heating and cooling season.
Your furnace has many fail-safe systems to prevent it from overheating and causing an unsafe condition. When a part malfunctions or becomes inoperable, your furnace will shut down on its own until the problem is fixed. These are the types of issues that should be serviced by our qualified service teams. We can check for pilot light malfunctions, cracks in the heat exchanger, gas supply problems and wiring issues and find an effective and lasting repair that will get your furnace working again.
